I understand that the RPN number = S x O x D
What is the rationale in applying the multiplication rule?
Is it because the event S, O and D are independent of each other?

Hi Uma,

Yes, they are independent so the values are multiplied to get the combined effect of all three values. Multiplying the values together also creates a lare enough scale for the values, whereas if you added the values, the scale would be much smaller.
