One of many areas where my experience is lacking is predicting seal life. I am referring to simple rotating shaft seals intended to keep oil in and dirt, water, etc. out. Are there any life-stress relationships and life-cycles relationships common in this area? What kind of experiences have you all had?

The RIAC Dataset NPRD 95 has data on rotary seals.
Also see Chapter 3 of the NWSC Carderock Handbook of Reliability Prediction Procedures for Mechanical Equipment.

NPRD data is many times too generic. I have chapter 3 of NWSC. I haven't read through it yet but it appears to be time independent for the most part. Few components actually have a constant failure rate. I will explore NWSC more but I was looking for any life-stress and life-cycle distributions that have worked for folks.

Thanks
