View Full Version : Repair Rules

First, thank you for answering all of my recent posts so quickly - this has been very helpful in building my simulations.

My question is going back to repair rules.

I have a group of similar components - lets call them Group B.
I also have a component called Item A.

If any item in Group B fails, I need to do preventative maintenance (replace) all components in Group B AND Item A. I accomplish this (I think) by assigning all of these components the same Item Group # and saying that PM occurs upon maintenance of another group item.

THe problem is, if Item A fails, preventative maintenance does NOT occur on items in Group B - this would only be a minor repair.

Failure and maintenance of either of these items do not cause my entire system to fail, but are necessary for a certain amount of throughput.

How should I model this minor intervention if Item A fails?

Thanks

Jennifer

Jennifer,
BlockSim 7 allows only 1 group for each item. As a result of this, there are two options. Either A does not get replaced when B fails, or a failure in A will cause all Bs to be replaced. Assuming A has an increasing failure rate, option 1 will be a pessimistic scenario since A will fail more often as it is not being replaced as often. Option 2 is too optimistic because Bs are replaced more often than they actually are. You can explore how far these two options are. If they are within an acceptable range, then either approximation should be ok. An option that might close the gap is to perform a PM on A on an interval equal to the mean time between failures of items in group B (and use option 1).

Makes sense. Thanks.

Might be something you want to incorporate into a future version, would be very useful to have multiple repair groups per item.

Absolutely!
