There are many aspects and factors to consider in Reliability Optimization. What are your criteria for optimization?
A starting point will be to look at the chapter starting at:
http://www.weibull.com/SystemRelWeb/reliability_importance_and_optimized_reliability_a llocation_analytical.htm (http://www.weibull.com/SystemRelWeb/reliability_importance_and_optimized_reliability_a llocation_)
This looks at ‘Cost’ as function of each component’s Reliability - and determines the component’s optimum reliability target (in order to achieve a system reliability goal while minimizing the total cost). It works with any time of redundancy provided you have the system reliability function (which can be obtained from BlockSim).
Obviously this concept can be expanded using additional cost functions (downtime, maintenance, spares, etc.), or by including other costs in the cost function.
This is based on the following paper which is also available on-line at http://www.weibull.com/knowledge/papers.htm
"Reliability Allocation and Optimization for Complex Systems" by Adamantios Mettas, Senior Scientist, ReliaSoft Corporation. Presented at the 46th Annual International Symposium on Product Quality and Integrity - the Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS), held in Los Angeles, California, USA, January 24-27, 2000
Hope this helps.
